RESEARCH AND INTERPRETATION
Interpretation of Jenny Saville (A-Level)
Details: I looked at experimenting with the work of Jenny Saville, using paintwork to stretch and expand texture barriers by freeing the limit of colour and shadow. I wanted to explore expressionism, discovering ways to portray Jenny’s grotesque approach to her work. These pieces are interpretations from existing Jenny Saville art, painted for my A-Level.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint and Pencil
Time taken: 2-5 hours per piece
Interpretation of Henrietta Harris (A-Level)
Details: Exploring the artist of Henrietta expanded my conceptual knowledge of Fragmentation, learning how to bend reality, morphing and mutating certain images through colour and paintwork. These pieces are interpretations from existing Henrietta Harris' art, painted for my A-Level.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint/Pencil and Pen Work
Time taken: 2-5 hours per piece
Original Art in the Style of Enersto Artillo (A-Level)
Details: Having researched many works by Ernesto Artillo, I wanted to experiment and create my own pieces in his style, discovering ways in which I could be original yet keep his use of feature isolation within my work.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint and Collage
Time taken: 1-2 hours per piece
SKETCHES
PORTRAITS
Details: I have always been fascinated with portraiture, enjoying the challenge of making realistic portrayal of people and their characters. These portraits were created within a short time span in order to force me into learning how to adapt quickly when painting.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint
Time taken: 2-3 hours for each piece.
Details: I spent more time on this portrait and focused on smaller features and details in order to achieve a photo-realistic style.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint
Time taken: 7-8 hours
Details: Portraiture became my main focus within art, aiming to achieve high quality work with photorealism, experimenting with liquid and reflection in order to create realistic compositions. The left piece is a recent work, compared to the right piece which was created in 2019.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint
Time taken: 5-6 hours
Details: Working with Acrylic restricted my texture ability. I started looking into different materials such as oil in order to create a completely different texture to my piece. It allowed me to experiment with different brushes, colours and thicknesses of paint in order to achieve another style of paintwork. This piece was created observing a live model in my own time outside school.
Materials Used: Oil
Time taken: 2 days
Details: This is my latest piece of work, working with photo-realism in order to achieve a realistic perspective from an unusual angle. I specifically worked with the skin detail in order to achieve this realistic texture on the skin along with adding undertones of purple, green and blue to create a variety of colour. This was created in my own time.
Materials Used: Acrylic Paint
Time taken: 3 days
STORYBOARD
Details: Following on from my photo-realistic piece above, I wanted to develop this idea further into a sequence and story-line, forming the genesis of a short film/CGI animation.
Materials Used: Pencil Work
Time taken: 45mins
VFX
Animation and Music Creation by Rebekah Ivy Searle
Details: I created this playful animation to accompany a song which I composed and produced. I wanted to create a welcoming atmosphere with linear graphics in order to achieve a visual narrative of the song.
Materials Used: Adobe After Effects (Animation) and Apple Logic Pro (Music)
Time taken: 2 weeks
Animation and Music Creation by Rebekah Ivy Searle
Details: This animation took dedication and a focus on the end goal, working with video effects to achieve the motions of colour and rhythm. I wanted the music to match the soundtrack I had composed, letting the animation create this huge tension which is built throughout the piece.
Materials Used: Adobe After Effects (Animation) and Apple Logic Pro (Music)
Time taken: 6 weeks
WORKS IN PROGRESS
With my latest work, I began experimenting with digital art, discovering new ways of using materials to create strange and unique worlds using a broad variety of brushes within Krita. I was able to produce projects with access to 144+ paintbrushes to choose from, opening up a whole different side to art. This allowed me to play around with different styles creating entirely different textures and artwork (as seen above).
